Surgical Treatments and Dental Care at Dentoblanc, Thiruvalla

Impaction/Wisdom Tooth Removal

If the wisdom tooth has not fully erupted into the mouth it is often necessary to make a cut in the gum over the tooth. Sometimes it is also necessary to remove some bone surrounding the wisdom tooth. The tooth may need to be cut into 2 or 3 pieces to remove it. Once the wisdom tooth has been removed the gum is put back into place with stitches. In the majority of cases these stitches are dissolvable and take around two weeks to disappear. Apicoectomy

An Apicoectomy, or Root-End Resection is a procedure in which the endodontist opens the gum tissue near the tooth to see the underlying bone and to remove any inflamed or infected tissue. The very end of the root is also removed.

Conservative treatments

Root Canal Treatments

Root canal therapy refers to the process by which a dentist treats the inner aspects of a tooth, specifically that area inside a tooth that is occupied by its "pulp tissue." Most people would probably refer to a tooth's pulp tissue as its "nerve." While a tooth's pulp tissue does contain nerve fibers it is also composed of arteries, veins, lymph vessels, and connective tissue.

What are some signs that you might need to have a root canal?

  • Discoloration or darkening of the tooth
  • Severe pain, especially when chewing or pressure on the tooth
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat and cold, even after the hot or cold has been removed
  • Persistent or recurring pimple on the gum area
  • Swelling and tenderness on the gum and nearby gums

Composite Resin Fillings

Resin fillings result in a natural-looking smile. The color can be closely matched to your natural teeth, so the restorations are nearly undetectable. And because the resin compound actually bonds to your tooth, the seal is tighter and the restored tooth can be even stronger than it was before. Composite resin fillings can also be made much smaller than an amalgam filling used to restore the same amount of decayed tooth, so less natural tooth structure is lost. The durability of resin tooth-filling material has not been time-tested, but continual improvements in the product have made resins nearly as durable as amalgam fillings.

Preventive treatments

Flossing

You should floss your teeth at least once a day. Flossing in between your teeth removes food debris and plaque form in between the teeth that a toothbrush can't reach. Plaque causes tooth decay and can lead to Gum diseases. Another great reason to floss is that recent studies have shown that flossing helps to prevent a heart attack or stroke.

When flossing, be sure to gently insert the floss in between the teeth, without snapping, which could damage the gum tissue. Gently move the floss up and down into the spaces between the gum and teeth. Floss the sides of all of your teeth, even if there isn't a tooth next to another one. There are a number of dental products available that are designed to make flossing easier, such as disposable dental flosses

Mouth washes

These are (usually flavoured) antiseptic solutions, also known as gargles, used for cleaning the mouth and freshening breath. Mouth washing also plays a role in patients who are unable to use a toothbrush or where a painful periodontal condition limits tooth brushing. It may also be used in patients with superficial infections of the mouth and can be beneficial in patients suffering from halitosis.

Brushing

Brushing teeth is a simple task, but lots of people brush their teeth incorrectly, either skipping around so much that they don't really clean anything, or rubbing so hard that they actually damage their teeth and gums.

No matter how good you try to brush your teeth, some bacteria will always be left behind. The growth of dental plaque starts again the moment you stop brushing your teeth and remove the toothbrush from your mouth.

You should be very careful to use proper toothbrushing techniques so that the percentage of bacteria left behind will be the lowest possible.

Proper brushing is essential for cleaning teeth and gums effectively. Use a toothbrush with soft, nylon, round-ended bristles that will not scratch and irritate teeth or damage gums.

Cosmetic treatments

Dental Crowns, Veneers and Bridges

Crowns are an ideal way to rebuild teeth which have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. The crown fits right over the remaining part of the tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape and contour of a natural tooth. Crowns are sometimes also known as 'caps'. An 'Anterior Crown' is a crown fitted to the front eight teeth.
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail. Sometimes a natural colour 'composite' material is used instead of porcelain.

Composite White Fillings

There are now many techniques available to restore a broken or decayed tooth using a tooth coloured filling material. Here at Dentoblanc, we use both composite and porcelain restorations. Both these filling materials are matched to your own natural tooth colour .They are bonded by a special adhesive into your tooth, adding to the retention of the filling and sealing the tooth.

Implants

A dental implant is a titanium rod that is gently placed directly into the jawbone to act as an anchor to support one or more crowns or a denture. Each implant can usually be used to support up to two false teeth. Visit us at Dentoblanc. Thiruvalla for expert dental care and dental advice over your concern

One major advantage of an implant is that it avoids the need to drill down the teeth either side of the "gap" which would normally be necessary in preparation of a conventional bridge. The implant also provides a stimulus to the bone reducing further shrinkage.

Implants can also be used as anchors to improve the stability and retention of loose dentures. Patients find great improvements during speech and eating, increased comfort and renewed confidence. We can often remove the tooth and fit a dental implant at the same appointment

Periodontal treatments

Periodontal Treatment- Specialized treatments are available for the treatment of mild to advanced gum disease.

Preventing dental disease is a fundamental part of our work here at Dentoblanc, Thiruvalla. Our aim is to help you achieve and maintain optimal dental health through regular hygienist visits.

Understanding gum disease

There are three main types of gum disease:

  1. Gingivitis- The main cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. When brushing and flossing techniques are not carried out effectively, this allows plaque to build up along the gum line. Plaque contains harmful bacteria resulting in the infection and inflammation of your gingivae or "gums". This condition is known as gingivitis and nearly all adults suffer from this to some degree. Bleeding on brushing or flossing your teeth is one of the earliest signs of gingivitis.
Regular visits to the hygienist will help you return to and maintain gingival health.
  2. Periodontal Disease left untreated, gum disease may progress to a more severe condition known as periodontitis . Here the bacterial infection progresses to the deeper supporting tissues of the teeth known as the periodontal tissues which includes the bone. As the disease progresses, the bone supporting the teeth is lost. The teeth become loosened, abscesses can form and teeth may eventually be lost.

Root Planing & Scaling - Halitosis, Bleeding & Swollen Gums

There are three broad classes of periodontal (gum) therapy for treatment of gum disease:

  1. Dental cleaning
  2. Root planing & scaling
  3. Periodontal (gum) surgery

A dental cleaning is what one typically receives at a six-month check-up. It is appropriate for those who maintain excellent home oral hygiene and have minimal gum pocket depths around their teeth. Patients should be aware that calling to schedule a 'check-up' doesn't necessarily mean that one desires a cleaning. A check-up could mean just x-rays and exam.

Root planing & scaling is usually recommended when one needs more work than a typical cleaning. This may be due to lack of adequate home oral hygiene, high sugar diet, deeper gum pocket depths around teeth or more extensive dental work that might inhibit access for a regular cleaning. Root planing & scaling is usually divided into two to four office visits. Novocain is frequently used since this cleaning will attempt to get to the full depth of the deeper gum pockets. This procedure usually involves minimal pain and one should expect to resume social and professional activities later that same night and certainly the next day.

Three to six months after completing the RP&S the periodontist would perform a reevaluation examination and would usually recommend one of the following:

  • Go back to regular cleanings but at a frequency of every three, not every six months
  • Repeat the root planing & scaling
  • Periodontal surgery is indicated for either the whole mouth or just refractory sections.

Gingivectomy is a relatively minor type of periodontal surgery that involves the removal of a small amount of gum tissue around a tooth or several teeth. A gingivectomy might be necessary to remove diseased tissue, allow a filling or crown to be placed below the gum line or to improve esthetics.

Periodontal surgery is similar to that performed during root planing & scaling except that the periodontist actually cuts the gum and moves it out of the way during the procedure. This allows him or her direct vision to really see the problem and direct mechanical access to attempt to clean and repair the diseased tissue.
